Thirty-One

When Nick opened his eyes, he was no longer vertical and his ears were ringing with a constant high-pitched whine. A few octaves below the ringing, a discordant chorus of car alarms wailed out of rhythm and off-key. He was atop Callie, who was facedown on the sidewalk. He got off her, turned her over. Felt her neck for a pulse. It was strong.

“Are you okay?” He shouted at her, though he barely heard his own voice. “Are you okay?”

Her eyes fluttered open, shock on her face. She shouted, “What happened? What was that?”

“A bomb.” He got up and pulled her to her feet. “You okay?”

“Shaky, but yes.”

He looked back to see that the front of McCann’s had been blown out into the street, bodies and body parts mixed in amid the glass, brick, and concrete. One of the bodies was Angeline’s. The force of the blast had blown off her clothes. Nick knew death when he saw it and he saw it in Angeline. He turned back to Callie.

“Run toward the bridge. There might be a second and third bomb set to go off when first responders show up.”

“What about you?”

“Forget about me. I probably should be dead five times over. This is my job. Go!” He pushed her away and ran back to the bar.
